Sorry to get in on this late, but I just rebuilt/reinstalled X from scratch after having not done it for a while. I found all the documentation that I needed in my /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc ... I found the files README.FreeBSD, QuickStart.doc, and README.Config especially useful. I built my XFree86 from the ports collection, so I don't know if the documentation will be the same if installed from the CD.
