Actualy, I think I almost figured it out.

In sendmail.cf, there is OT5d/4h

Would setting this to OT5d/0h turn off the first warning message?

If so, we can then define a 24/7 connected system as a MX for the
temporarily connected machines, and no pesky "connection to host timed
out" messages will be sent out

Any sendmail experts that can confirm my thinking?
