Thanks guys!  It works!  passwd is fine.  I must be broken.  How dumb of 
me.  <Smack> <Smack>  Ouch!  :-)

Yep.  It says:
paradise: {46} ls -al passwd
-r-sr-xr-x  1 bin  bin  20480 Mar 24 00:48 passwd

But of course that's how it is to live on the bleeding edge of 
technology.  :-)
