You've reached the wrong conclusion here. Just IGNORE userconfig. Use it if you've got ISA devices that need their irq's, etc., set, but in general, you can ignore it for your Adaptec board. Don't worry about it not being in the list of devices. Just boot the kernel and attempt to install. sysinstall will show you where you're going to be installing, so there won't be any danger. It is supported, and I happen to have a machine running just fine with a 2842.
