I have recently taken an interest in FreeBSD. I wished to install a copy =
of this OS onto my computer so I went to the website and was told all I =
needed was two blank floppies and these directories ("these directories" =
was a hyperlink). This took me to the installation handbook. I read the =
documentation. I made an inventory of my computer. Then I backed up my =
hard drive using the Compaq SystemSave utility which came with my =
computer. This backed up my C: drive to the D: drive which is a logical =
drive contained in the extended partition of the hard drive. I wished to =
install from an MS-DOS drive so next I downloaded presizer.exe from the =
tools directory of the FreeBSD FTP server. I shrunk my C: drive which =
created a gap between the primary partition and the extended partition. =
I moved the extended partition next to the primary partition so that the =
space created was at the end of the two partitions not between them. =
This freed up about 1GB of space. Since FreeBSD requires a primary =
partition I used fdisk to try and create a primary partition but it told =
me that there was already a primary partition and would not allow me to =
create another. I continued to get the appropriate files to install =
FreeBSD despite this setback. I created a FreeBSD folder "C:\FreeBSD" =
containing two folders named bin and manpages. I copied the contents of =
the bin and manpages on the ftp server to my local disk. Next I =
downloaded fdimage.exe from the the tools directory to create the floppy =
disks. Then I used my ftp program Crystal FTP 2000 to download the =
floppy disk images in binary mode. I downloaded kern.flp and =
mfsroot.flp. I created the two disks using fdimage after I had formatted =
them. Neither of them had any bad sectors. I changed the boot order of =
my computer so that it would boot from floppy disk first and I tried to =
boot from the kern.flp disk despite the fact that I had no partition =
available to install FreeBSD but it did not work. I read further into =
the documentation and found that the installation creates its own =
partition so now what do I do to get the installation started since the =
boot disks won't work ? Do I need any other directories other than the =
bin and manpages directories ? Will a boot manager make this =
installation easier and if so where will I get one and how will I =
install it ?

Thanking you in advance for your help,

Robert Kiely.
