Hi Jeff,

I have a similar problem but with a AMD GPU, the only chance to recover my
screen is to use the power-switch on my screen (Workstation), which is not
really possible with a Laptop ;) 

As a workaround you can try this as root/sudo:

/usr/local/bin/xset dpms force on

It disables the power-management for the display, sorry for not being a bigger
help, i have the exact same problem since quite a long time.
