I just noticed that there are a bunch of GEOM options in /usr/src/sys/conf/GENERIC that I was not using in my custom kernel. I just added several of them that seem at least vaguely appropriate to my machine (I don't know what any of them actually are for, however). Extended slices are still working okay with the new options added. Are you using any of them in your kernel?
