You can't patch /etc/make.conf, since it's not part of the FreeBSD
distribution. I guess patching the ports would accomplish nothing, and
normally we prefer if ports behave consistently.

Whatever you had in mind, couldn't you just simply send the patch, so I
can clearly see what you are trying to do?
