I actually looked for /etc/defaults/make.conf, but it doesn't exist on any of my 5.1 systems that were installed from scratch. Now that I look around, though, I see that there is an extensive make.conf(5) manpage, as well as share/examples/etc/make.conf. Live and learn, I guess. Thanks again, JN
