You should do "buildworld" instead of "world" and then follow the path
described in UPDATING (way down~~~ too much for my taste). Buildworld does
not test your kernel.
And you will have to install a new bootloader (also described in UPDATING)
to go with the new kernel (you should be building the new GENERIC, not your
customized kernel).
