Yes, i know.  I was rather interested in the author's opinion.
Anyway, the code has been imported with a vendor tag, and we are free
to add something like __GNUC__ ourselves.

I remember that i've dicussed this with Jochen, but i would have to
lookup the mail archives.  I think we didn't agree on a commonly
accepted way to handle this.  Well, perhaps we should have a look into
the current NetBSD version, this problem must have been much more
urgent for NetBSD (unless they've been solving it elsewhere).
