Greetings from Jeff Kelley, DDS! Are Your Teeth Temperamental? Dealing with Sensitive Smiles Are you overly sensitive? Relax, I don't mean crying during life insura= nce commercials; I'm talking about your smile=2E Millions of adults str= uggle with hypersensitive teeth, meaning they are sensitive to hot and = cold temperatures, very sugary or acidic foods and drinks and vigorous = tooth brushing=2E This kind of sensitivity is often called "dentin hype= rsensitivity=2E" Dentin is the tissue that makes up the core of each tooth=2E Above the = gum line, dentin is protected with a coating of enamel=2E Unfortunately= , as enamel is worn away or decayed, dentin becomes exposed and recepti= ve to sensations that cause painful nerve responses=2E This can also oc= cur as the result of receding gums, a common symptom of gum disease=2E So, what causes sensitive teeth? A number of things may be to blame=2E = Over-zealous brushing with a firm bristled tooth brush or abrasive toot= hpaste can lead to dentin hypersensitivity, as can gum disease, which i= s the result of poor brushing and flossing habits=2E Your diet may also= play a role, as frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks can ch= emically dissolve tooth enamel=2E Finally, abnormal wear on tooth surfa= ces from chronic clenching or grinding of teeth, nail biting and chewin= g on hard objects can lead to sensitive teeth=2E=20 If you're already suffering from overly sensitive teeth, there are prod= ucts that can help=2E Toothpaste designed for those with sensitive teet= h can reduce the pain associated with the condition after only a few da= ys of use=2E Also, be sure to stick with a soft-bristled toothbrush - h= ard toothbrushes will only exacerbate the problem=2E Brush and floss da= ily to maintain healthy gums and protect dentin from exposure=2E Your continued good health is always our primary concern, so please con= tact my office at (817)877-1651 or jakelleydds@sbcglobal=2Enet if you'r= e suffering from hypersensitive teeth, another dental ailment, or are j= ust due for your regular check-up=2E We'll take great care of you! Best Regards, Jeff Kelley, DDS P=2ES=2E If you have any friends or family members who you feel could u= se our services, please don't hesitate to have them call us=2E We'll be= sure to take good care of them=2E
