advantages: more control with freebsd, those little broadband *magic* boxes are full of black magic, they are pure evil ;) unless you have a very cool little black magic box, you probable can't do vpn, tunneling with GRE, using any routing protocol such as BGP, RIP, OSPF and so on bandwidth limiting... great if you run an ftp and want to be able to play your internet games without lag (guess whos a CS freak ?) proxies, which I don't think that D-link supports most d-link routers only support 10 port forwardings.. which kinda sucks you can set up some MUCH more advanced firewall rules.. you could even apply different firewall rules depending on what time it is.. maybe you usually play those games during 6pm to 10pm.. then you'd give the ftp a bit less bandwidth, though the rest of that day it'll get full... just an example.. and pretty much everything else you might want to do.. disadvantages.. a black magic box is better looking..?? nah.. ;) yup, 2 ethernets would do just fine.. on larger setups you usually have a DMZ for your servers, but with 3 computers on you network, I don't think that would be necessary.. hope this helps.. /K ----- Original Message ----- From: "RD" <unixnoob@charter.net> To: <freebsd-questions@freebsd.org> Cc: <freebsd-questions@freebsd.org> Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 1:08 AM Subject: FreeBSD Router/Firewall Questions > Hi guys, me again :) > well I've been reading up on compiling a kernel for nat and ipfw.
