(CC'ing fontconfig maintainer, the PR slowly goes into oblivion) I'd like to point out that pkgsrc's dejavu package installs configuration files, too. It installs them into EXAMPLESDIR, though. Besides, there are a number of ports that install into fonts/conf.{avail|d}, e.g. japanese/font-ipa japanese/font-ipa-uigothic japanese/font-ipaex japanese/font-kochi japanese/font-mona-ipa japanese/font-mplus japanese/font-mplus-ipa japanese/font-sazanami japanese/font-takao japanese/font-ume japanese/font-vlgothic x11-fonts/indic-ttf x11-fonts/wqy but they don't have an option *not* to install into etc/fonts/conf.d.
