[Bruce fixed a BSD 4.4 makefile bug] I recommend to read the paper Recursive Make Considered Harmful, by Peter Miller http://www.canb.auug.org.au/~millerp/rmch/recu-make-cons-harm.html A non-recursive make should perform make -jN much better.
