Adding hw.vga.textmode=0 worked, and I like the graphical demon for what that's worth. (: I've also upgraded the bootcode, although that may mean nothing if the textmode is avoiding the problem. In any case, I guess I have a known-bad (?) system, so if I can help you out in some way let me know. Bonking that box every now and then isn't a problem for me.
