I was just helping someone setup a freebsd 4.4 box, and I noticed that he was using the old method of building kernels. I wondered where he was getting this from, and checked the handbook on the website - sure enough, we still list the directions. Since these directions are quite different than the buildkernel/buildworld system, can we totally remove them? If not, they should be explained to be mutually exclusive, NOT just two ways to do the same thing. Perhaps the "old way" could be called "FreeBSD 4.2 and older", while the "new way" could be called "FreeBSD 4.3 and above." If someone more familiar with docs could make one of the two changes, I'd appreciate it. If not, I guess I'll have to dive in and learn docbook next week.
