I'm also interested in this, especially now that /bin/sh is the default in
FreeBSD 14.0 and is so much improved from where it was.

I did not know about !! until now. I had only been aware of !$ which is oft=
en
useful for me.

I agree that we could return some kind of error if history is not compiled =
in.
