If you tried the modules built from that repo but with newer FreeBSD then that's probably not going to work. If you copy over sys/dev/virtio and sys/modules/virtio onto a newer FreeBSD tree, you'll probably have some com= pile errors to sort though but it shouldn't be anything major.
