I can't think of any particular reason why is shouldn't be installed under / 
instead of /boot other than tradition.

I quick survey of Linux systems shows that only about half prefer /boot. A 
look at Solaris shows that it's installed under /kernel.

Other than the fact that /boot can have its own partition separate from /, is 
there any advantage to putting the kernel there?
