Well, it's just been pointed out to me that the timing of this was rotten, and that there is a heated argument going on in a mailing list I had never even heard of before (freebsd-mobile). I've since looked at the thread going on over there and am rather dismayed at the misunderstandings. Rest assured that the creation of this repository is not because of the new-bus versus newconfig debates, it is purely coincidence and NOT some plan to undermine your efforts. However.. The reasons for creating it are still valid. The FreeBSD kernel has two fundamentally different configuration mechanisms in use at the moment. The Alpha is entirely new-bus and has been from the start. Other chunks are also new-bus, namely smbus, iicbus, ppbus, usb, etc. The new-bus repository is essentially the logical next step - removing the inflexible and crufty old i386-only static-only configuration mechanism and replacing it with an interface to what is already there in the kernel.. That's what the new-bus repository is about. It's not designing 'yet another' bus configuration system, it's finishing and using the one we've already got. As to where the mail goes, I've had a number of requests to leave it this way. The original plan (before I even knew about the newconfig effort) was that this would take over from the old interface. This system has been a work-in-progress for something like 2 or 3 years and is designed specifically for what we need/want for FreeBSD. While it's not my decision which code and when gets committed, as far as I can tell at this stage, it's likely that this stuff will at some point, possibly quite soon. Our developers need to be kept informed so that they can make decisions knowing what is going on. However, would it be better to drop the cvs-all mailing list from the commit messages and change it so that the commits go to the cvs-committers and new-bus-arch lists instead?
