The IDE adapter is unlikely the culprit.  Remember, all recent
mainboards ship with one on-board, but you are the only one reporting
this kind of problems.

The error description looks mysterious.  I cannot really imagine of
any bug that would cause _this_ behaviour.  Are you sure all your
interrupt assignments are okay?

The PCI code has been drastically changed over the time, perhaps our
PCI gurus might have an idea.
