Very real problems, glad you raised them !

The SMTP thing is solved by the famous "SMTP after POP" hack, you have
first to authentificate yourself, with POP, and then can use a related
SMTP server. This is the base of all the "free" e-mail services like
www.gmx.de. The times they are changing...

DNS could be negotiated via PPP, but I have no idea.
