Holy Moly, a question I can answer! I've been using 16C650s instead of 16550s for 4 years. I've had the '650 support turned on in sio.c for every version that I've been running since 2.2.5. Runs great with my ISDN TA (BitSurfer). BTW, this is on a 486DX66. If your cards have socketed UARTS (40 pin DIP being easy to remove, the square 44 pin PLCCs are a _hump_ to remove without the right tool) you can just swap the chips.
