this is the bit of interest.. 

Maybe someone else with more audio foo can see if there is work on 
supporting
this.. Alternatively maybe Gateway have wired the MB in such a way that 
it is
connected up so that the outputs being used for the speakers are not the 
ones you'd expect..

what about the earphones?  they might be on separate outputs..
