Hi fellow sysinstall(8)ers, The time has long come to embrace a replacement for sysisntall(8). In FreeBSD-9 we saw the introduction of bsdinstall(8) on the release media (a good and great step). Currently in RELENG_9, bsdinstall(8) and sysinstall(8) live side-by-side but in RELENG_10, sysinstall(8) is relegated to the Attic (read: not available). Envisioning a world without sysinstall(8) has highlighted the fact that bsdinstall(8) does not implement the "Configure" menu from sysinstall. This is viewed as a value-drain in functionality w/respect to post-installation configuration routines. Enter bsdconfig(8). bsdconfig(8) aims to meet-or-exceed all functionality provided by sysinstall(8)'s "Configure" menu (for the express purpose of allowing sysinstall(8) to safely _and quietly_ disappear from FreeBSD starting with RELENG_10). Additional introduction from the pkg-descr: === bsdconfig is a robust utility for configuring/managing various aspects of the FreeBSD Operating System. Feature-highlights include (but are not limited to): - Modular, stable, efficient and i18n-compatible. - Easily maintained/extendable sh(1) source/syntax. - Works with both dialog(1) in base and Xdialog(1) from ports (x11/xdialog). - rc.conf(5) configuration/management based on sysutils/sysrc - Timezone configuration based on sysutils/tzdialog - Networking management based on sysutils/host-setup WWW: http://druidbsd.sourceforge.net/ === In this Call For Testing (CFT), I would like anybody/everybody that is familiar with sysinstall to do a comparative test with the thought-in-mind that we are working toward the immediate goal of getting a stable revision into HEAD so we can MFC before the 9.1-R freeze date (scheduled July 2nd). With that, I say no more -- pointing you to the newly-added port... sysutils/bsdconfig -- Devin _____________ The information contained in this message is proprietary and/or confidential.
