After ports installation & following the handbook I was somewhat befuddl ed on how to start samba. A google search instructed me that I had to add enable_samba = "YES" in /etc/rc.conf before I could start samba using the package provided start script (/usr/local /etc/rc.d/samba.sh) _without_ restarting. It was not clear to me that I had to add the enable line to /etc/rc.conf before starting samba without rebooting.
