I tried installing 5.0-RELEASE on a Dell XPS D300 with an ATAPI CD and an Adaptec 2940 controlling just the disk, and an Intel Pro100 NIC. Firstly the mini-ISO from the UK mirror. This went OK right until the extraction of scrypto had completed, then it gave me an error concerning getting packages (unfortunately I didn't write it down) and dropped me back into sysinstall, missing out all the post-install config. The next try was the floppies. Again fine until extraction of scrypto, then it complained that it couldn't get the ports collection from ftp.uk.freebsd.org but let me continue. It got the package index just fine and installed the perl 5.6 port. Everything finished normally. I noticed a couple of things in dmesg output that I didn't see with 4.7: unknown: <PNP0c02> can't assign resources (port) There were six lines like this, one of which said (irq) rather than port. Also "pkg_add -r cvsup-without-gui" failed with a "File Unavailable" error. I was able to get it using sysinstall (after the install completed) though. I like the idea of moving perl out of the base but installing it by default. I think this should be taken further, with (at least) bind and sendmail treated the same way (I might be a DJB fan...)
