Ugh, sorry for the noise. I should have double checked the code samples.

The bug can be seen when using [[ in Bash, e.g.:

```
$ [[ $(echo 1) = 1 ]]; echo $?
0
$ [[ $(echo line | wc -l) = 1 ]]; echo $?
1
```
