I don't fetch a tar[.gz] file, but rather a whole directory (files are
unpacked) which goes in a tar file:
$ tar tvzf dvi2xx.tar.gz
-r--r--r-- ctan/TeX 2762 Apr 25 06:50 1994 dvi2xx/README
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
this change in the distfile.
