I remember seeing slowness on older machines - and part was the
ident timeout.   All around mail performance improved when I went
to a 4.x platform and sendmail in the 8.11 series.

I'd suggest an OS and sendmail upgrade.  I hated to do that to my
old machine with an uptime of over 500 days - but it had to be
done.
