This needs to be regression tested as far back as ESXi 5.0 imho, as that is
still a common production environment.

It would be nice to have a fix that just did the right thing on any of ESXi=
 5.0
to 6.5.

It would also be nice to have a fix that works on FreeBSD 10, 11 and -curre=
nt,
and even nicer if that fix could back port even further back.
