OK, I'm convinced it isn't as easy as I thought. We're in bad need for clarification what the desired behaviour is. I think the best thing to do is to suspend the issue and I'll write a little testsuite first. We can then make our minds up whether what my testsuite expects is right and then test different versions against it. Again, if someone has some test cases to add, let me know. What does POSIX say about the issue?
