From this description, I gather that you have downloaded the wrong thing.
In my own source-jdk1.2.2 directory, I do the following:
bash-2.03$ ls -l jdk1.2.2-src.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 kjkoster nis 19742229 May 15 07:40 jdk1.2.2-src.tar.gz
bash-2.03$ ls -l work
