For starters, nothing better than Pine that I know of. If you want much greater configurability, handling of multiple mailboxes, threading, and so on, you could try mutt (http://www.mutt.org) -- but if you don't find any specific deficiency in Pine that's getting you bugged, I suggest you stick with it.
