Valid for what?  xigmanas via the ctl.conf explicitly requested logical block
size of 512 bytes -- CTL done it in both cases.  If physical block size is not
specified in config, it is taken from underlying ZVOL.  So far everything makes
sense if we assume the quoted ctl.conf is from the second ESXi output.  Please
show ctl.conf for the case you think is wrong, otherwise I still don't see a
problem.

PS: Last time I heard ESXi did not like increased block sizes, so all this
experiment may be moot.
