They do not need KMS at all. Your case again confirms my assumption. Thank you for that! So you did the exactly right thing by disabling KMS by removing/renaming the offending drivers. May I ask you for a favor? Could you please check by entering=20 # sysctl hw.acpi.supported_sleep_state whether your system supports S3 suspend state? (e.g. sleep) If it does, then please try out using the "zzz" command both from console a= nd from xorg, with the SC console enabled and without (!) KMS driver loaded. I ask because I would be curious to know whether my assumption is true that suspend/resume will work fine with (and _only_ with) this configuration.
