Yup, rebuilding the kernel did fix the problem, so that was it. Just wanted to forward this message to the list in case anyone else has this problem after installing the ipfw patch. My own problem is with OpenSSH. The default one from the core system compile of make world no longer works. I had to disable it and use the ports tree version from /usr/ports/security/openssh.
