Before I converted to FreeBSD, I ran Linux on a 486DX-33 with 8MB of RAM.
Compiling a Linux 2.0 kernel took 4-6 hours depending upon whether or not I
had X running at the same time.  Unfortunately, I am not in a position to run
your experiment, but it does sound interesting.
