FreeBSD is for PC's.  But if you insist upon using Macs, I think you can get 
a version of Redhat for Macintoshes.  GET A REAL LAPTOP!  GET A PC!

Also, MacOS should work fine for you if you are unfamiliar with unix. I'm 
sure the university has a unix server for you to play around with if you 
ever need a unix system.
