I don't think that's a bug on those programs. Back in the 4.X days, there was a bug in the user-level threading library that resulted in stdout being marked nonblocking occasionally, and indeed stuff broke: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-hackers/2005-January/009741.html
