I think having 8 SATA > cards in them would be your best option. IMHO, best option for topic stater is to buy Sun, grrr, sorry, Oracle Thumper. It has custom-build mobo with proper configuration of PCIe lanes, proper case for 48 3.5" SATA drives, already configured and tuned ZFS (Oracle 10, of course), etc. And as it is Opteron-based server, FreeBSD could be installed too :) Its official name is SunFire X4540.
