As someone else just pointed out, it seems to happen only on
5.0/CURRENT machines.  (I always see this on my CURRENT machines and
never on my 4-STABLE machines.)

At one point, I think I had an email exchange with ru@ on this list in
which he posted a possible fix, but I don't think anybody ever tested
or committed it.  (I should have been one of those "anybody"s.)
