The comment has "When the addends cancel to 0", which exactly mirrored the if
condition. We could extend it to something like "When the addends cancel to 0
and ..." but that seems excessive. Perhaps just "Ensure the result has the
correct sign ." which leaves a clue as to why the special case exists.
