They do change, as programs evolve, and new features are added. That's why mergemaster is indeed mentioned in /usr/src/UPDATING. That's why there's the following bit in /usr/src/UPDATING: 20010112: Important new FreeBSD-version stuff: PAM support has been worked in, partially from the "Unix" OpenSSH version.
