Works well here, but I had to set:
hint.psm.0.flags="0x1000"

in /boot/device.hints

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 5150:

psm0: current command byte:0065
Synaptics Touchpad:
  model: 1
  firmware ver.: 5.9
  rot180: No
  portrait: No
  sensor: 37
  hardware: 37
  newABS: Yes
  capPen: No
  simpleCmd: Yes
  geometry: 1
  capExtended: Yes
  capSleep: Yes
  capFourButtons: No
  capMultiFinger: Yes
  capPalmDetect: Yes
psm0: <PS/2 Mouse> flags 0x1000 irq 12 on atkbdc0
psm0: model Synaptics TouchPad, device ID 0-00, 4 buttons
psm0: config:00007000, flags:00000000, packet size:6
psm0: syncmask:c0, syncbits:80

I'll also try the other patch...

Bye,
Dario
