Speaking of what is "better" and what is not, there is such a thing like "habit". If it does not require much effort to maintain it, better leave it as is. I personally often use telnet to connect to TCP-based services to test things, I need no encryption at all and I see no reason to switch to another tool (even if it is "better" in some sense).help
