The bisect ended on the __FreeBSD_verion bump and somehow I am sure that
is not responsible for a change in behavior.

As you said the problem is likely a race/problem elsewhere just exposed
by this.

I haven't had much more time to explore either.  Will let you knnow in
case I find out.
