I've learned the same in a very small two-pc's-sharing-a-printer network.
RealTek PCI in one box, NE1000 ISA in the other. The NE1000 seemed to be
unable to connect to anything.
Removed the RealTek, dropped in a fl.2.50 ($1,=) fourth-hand, scratched and
abused NE1000. Everything worked fine.
NE1000 the lowest form of quality? Not the pre-1985 ones, for sure. :-)
