Hi Arnout, Unfortunately you cannot install FreeBSD in an extended partition. A FreeBSD slice is equivalent to a primary (DOS) partition and that's what you'll need to install it. Maybe you can use your Partition Magic to shrink the extended partition and to create another primary partition. good luck ----- Original Message ----- From: "Arnout Bruinsma" <bruinsma31@zonnet.nl> To: <freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG> Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2001 9:16 PM Subject: freebsd-questions > Dear Sir/Lady, > > I bought a book called Free BSD Unleashed. > With it came a cdrom containing disc 1 of Free BSD 4.4 > During installation I ran into a partition problem. > According to Partition Magic my disk looks like this: > ============================================================================ =============================== > > Partition Information for Disk 1: 39260.4 Megabytes > Volume PartType Status Size MB PartSect # StartSect > TotalSects UsedSects FreeSects > ============================================================================ =============================== > > C:WINDOWS C FAT32 Pri,Boot 3004.3 0 0 > 63 6,152,832 910,062 5,242,770 > ExtendedX Pri 36256.1 0 1 6,152,895 > 74,252,430 59,279,850 14,972,580 > EPBR Log 23.5 None -- > 6,152,895 48,195 48,195 0 > *:boot Debian Linux Ext2 Log,Boot 23.5 6152895 0 > 6,152,958 48,132 4,138 43,994 > EPBR Log 31.4 6152895 1 > 6,201,090 64,260 64,260 0 > *:boot SuSe Linux Ext2 Log 31.3 6201090 0 > 6,201,153 64,197 7,293 56,904 > EPBR Log 23.5 6201090 1 > 6,265,350 48,195 48,195 0 > Unallocated Log 23.5 6265350 0 > 6,265,413 48,132 1,558 46,574 > EPBR Log 13696.0 6265350 1 6,313,545 > 28,049,490 28,049,490 0 > D:WINDOWS D FAT32 Log 13696.0 6313545 0 6,313,608 > 28,049,427 1,118,616 26,930,811 > EPBR Log 7169.6 6313545 1 34,363,035 > 14,683,410 14,683,410 0 > *:Debian/GNU 2.2Linux Ext2 Log 7169.6 34363035 0 > 34,363,098 14,683,347 1,255,963 13,427,384 > EPBR Log 7004.9 34363035 1 49,046,445 > 14,346,045 14,346,045 0 > *:SuSe Linux 7.0Linux Ext2 Log 7004.9 49046445 0 > 49,046,508 14,345,982 2,662,750 11,683,232 > Free Space Log 7310.8 None -- 63,392,490 > 14,972,580 0 14,972,580 > EPBR Log 996.2 49046445 1 > 78,365,070 2,040,255 2,040,255 0 > *:SWAPSPACE2 Linux Swap Log 996.2 78365070 0 > 78,365,133 2,040,192 8 2,040,184 > > In short,my extended partion houses 2 boot partitions,Windows D ,and two > operating systems (Debian,SuSe). > There is space for a BSD boot partition/1st slice(23,5 Mb) and a root > partition/2nd slice > (Free space 7+Gb) > > But the BSD FDISK Partition Editor shows this: > > Offset Size > End name Ptype > Desc Subtype > > 0 63 > 62 - > 6 unused 0 > 63 6152832 6152894 > ad0s1 2 fat > 11 > 6152895 74252430 80405324 > ad0s2 4 extended 15 > > 80405325 12915 80418239 > - 6 unused > 0 > > It seems I cannot enter the extended partition slice,and it is there > that I would like to install BSD ,of course without disturbing my > current configuration. > As an extremely fresh newbie I apologize beforehand for asking a silly > question and I thank you for your time . > Getting an answer , though , would help me on my road in search for an > operating system that suits me. > > > Bij voorbaat dank, > > Arnout Bruinsma > > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org > with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message > To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
